The quick answer

Hydrogen peroxide is simple to use but should never be combined with certain products. Here is what to avoid and why.

Hydrogen peroxide is a useful cleaner on its own. Problems start when it is mixed with other household chemicals. Keep this list in mind.

Never mix with

1. Bleach

Combining hydrogen peroxide with chlorine bleach causes a vigorous reaction that releases oxygen and heat, and can produce irritating fumes. Never combine them in the same bottle, bucket or toilet.

2. Vinegar

Mixing peroxide and vinegar in one container forms peracetic acid, which is corrosive and can irritate skin, eyes and lungs. If you use both, use them separately and rinse in between.

3. Other cleaning products

Many commercial cleaners contain ingredients that react unpredictably. Do not pour hydrogen peroxide into other products or their bottles.

4. Metal containers and catalysts

Some metals (such as iron and copper) and organic matter speed up decomposition. Store and mix it in the original bottle or a clean, opaque plastic bottle.

Safe to combine with

  • Distilled water: for diluting to a lower strength
  • Bicarbonate of soda: as a paste for grout and scrubbing, made fresh and used straight away

Other safety rules

  • Always label any bottle you decant into
  • Never store a mixture in a sealed container, as gas can build up
  • Wear gloves, especially at 6%
  • Avoid eyes. If splashed, rinse with plenty of water and seek medical advice if irritation continues
  • Never swallow, and keep away from children

Golden rule

One cleaner at a time. Rinse surfaces with water between products.
