The quick answer

Food grade hydrogen peroxide is about purity, not drinking. We explain what the label means and how it differs from other grades.

You will often see hydrogen peroxide sold as "food grade". It is one of the most misunderstood labels in cleaning products, so here is what it really means.

Grades of hydrogen peroxide

  • Pharmacy / cosmetic grade: often contains stabilisers such as phosphates or tin compounds to extend shelf life.
  • Technical / industrial grade: for manufacturing, bleaching and industrial uses, and may contain more additives.
  • Food grade: high purity, with no stabilisers of the kind added to some pharmacy grades. Used in food processing, for example to clean food-contact equipment.

What food grade does NOT mean

Food grade does not mean it is safe to drink, and it is not a health supplement. Swallowing hydrogen peroxide, even diluted, can cause serious harm. Never drink it, and keep it out of reach of children.

Why choose food grade for cleaning?

  • No unnecessary stabilisers or additives
  • Breaks down to water and oxygen
  • Suitable for cleaning around food preparation areas, followed by a rinse
  • Good for people who prefer simple, low-residue products

Shelf life

Because food grade peroxide has fewer stabilisers, it should be stored carefully: cool, dark, in its original opaque bottle with the cap closed. Use it within the recommended period after opening.

Which strength?

3% (10 vol) suits everyday household cleaning. 6% (20 vol) suits tougher jobs or diluting to your own strength.

Shop: Hydrogen Peroxide 3% Food Grade and 6% Food Grade.
