How to Remove Gel and Acrylic Nails at Home with Acetone

Pure acetone is the quickest way to remove gel polish and acrylic nails. Done patiently, it lifts the product without you having to pick, peel or over-file your natural nails.

What you will need

• Acetone 99.5%
• Cotton pads or balls
• Foil squares (or reusable soak-off clips)
• A nail file (100/180 grit) and buffer
• An orange stick or cuticle pusher
• Cuticle oil or hand cream

Removing gel polish

1. Break the seal. Lightly file the shiny top coat so the acetone can soak in. Do not file down to the nail.
2. Soak. Place an acetone-soaked cotton pad on each nail and wrap tightly with foil.
3. Wait 10–15 minutes. Warmth helps, so wrap your hands in a towel.
4. Push off. Gently push the softened gel away with an orange stick. If it resists, re-wrap for another 5 minutes rather than forcing it.
5. Finish. Buff lightly, wash your hands and apply cuticle oil.

Removing acrylic nails

1. Clip the nails short and file away as much of the acrylic bulk as you safely can.
2. Soak the fingertips in a small glass bowl of acetone, or use the foil method, for 20–30 minutes.
3. Gently scrape away softened acrylic, re-soaking as needed.
4. Buff smooth, wash and moisturise well.

• Acetone is highly flammable. Keep it away from candles, hobs, heaters and cigarettes.
• Work in a well-ventilated room.
• Use glass or metal bowls. Acetone can melt some plastics.
• Protect varnished furniture, as acetone strips finishes.
• Acetone dries out skin, so moisturise afterwards.
