If you mix your own liquids, the base ratio is the first decision you make. The ratio tells you how much vegetable glycerine (VG) and propylene glycol (PG) is in the base. The first number is always VG.
What VG and PG each do
- VG (vegetable glycerine) is thick and slightly sweet. More VG gives a smoother feel and denser vapour.
- PG (propylene glycol) is thin and carries flavour well. More PG gives a stronger throat feel and sharper flavour.
50/50
The all-rounder. Thin enough to wick quickly in small pod kits and mouth-to-lung devices, with a balance of flavour and vapour. A great starting point if you are new to mixing.
70/30
The most popular ratio for sub-ohm and direct-lung devices. It is thicker, smoother and produces more vapour, while still carrying flavour well.
80/20 and higher VG
Very smooth and very cloud-focused. It is thick, so it needs devices with large wicking holes. Too thick for most small pods, where it can cause dry hits.
Quick guide
- Small pod or MTL device: 50/50
- Sub-ohm tank or larger device: 70/30
- RDA / cloud-chasing: 80/20
Always check your device manufacturer's recommendation, as coil and wick design make a big difference.
Do flavourings change the ratio?
Yes, slightly. Most concentrates are PG-based, so adding 10–20% flavour nudges the final mix towards PG. Our VG/PG calculator on the product page helps you work out the final ratio.
