The quick answer

3% · 10 vol

Everyday gentle cleaning: worktops, sinks, grout and light laundry stains.

6% · 20 vol

Tougher jobs and laundry whitening, or mix 1 to 1 with distilled water to make your own 3%.

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a simple compound of hydrogen and oxygen that breaks down into water and oxygen. It is sold in different strengths, and the two most popular for home and professional use are 3% and 6%.

What do the percentages and "vols" mean?

The percentage is the amount of hydrogen peroxide in the solution. The "volume" figure describes how much oxygen it can release:

  • 3% = 10 vol
  • 6% = 20 vol

So 6% is twice as concentrated as 3%.

When to choose 3%

3% is the everyday strength. It is the one to reach for when you want a gentle cleaner around the home:

  • Wiping kitchen worktops, chopping boards and fridge shelves
  • Freshening sinks, grout and shower areas
  • Lifting light stains on white fabrics (patch test first)
  • Cleaning toothbrush holders and bathroom fittings

When to choose 6%

6% is stronger, so it suits tougher jobs and people who like to dilute to their own strength:

  • Heavier staining on grout and white surfaces
  • Laundry whitening boosts
  • Diluting down to 3% (mix equal parts 6% and distilled water), which often works out cheaper per litre

At 6% wear gloves and avoid contact with eyes, as it can irritate skin and eyes more than 3%.

What "food grade" means

Food grade refers to the purity of the product and the absence of the stabilisers found in some pharmacy-grade peroxides. It does not mean it is for drinking. Never swallow hydrogen peroxide at any strength.

Safety basics

  • Store in the original opaque bottle, somewhere cool and dark
  • Never mix with vinegar, bleach or other cleaning products
  • Hydrogen peroxide can bleach coloured fabrics and some surfaces, so test first

Shop: Hydrogen Peroxide 3% or Hydrogen Peroxide 6%, available from small bottles up to bulk sizes.

Always read the label and the safety data sheet, which you can download from each product page.
