What Is Nail Prep and Why It Matters for Gel Manicures

Ask any nail technician why a gel manicure lifted after a few days and the answer is usually the same: the nail was not prepped properly. Nail prep solution is a simple step that makes a big difference to how long a manicure lasts.

What does nail prep do?

The natural nail plate carries oils, moisture and fine dust, especially after filing and buffing. Even a little oil from your fingertips can stop gel or polish from bonding. Nail prep:

• Removes surface oils left by skin and cuticle products
• Clears filing dust after shaping and buffing
• Dehydrates the nail plate temporarily so products grip better
• Evaporates quickly, so you can move straight on to base coat

When to use it

1. After shaping, cuticle work and buffing
2. Just before applying primer or base coat
3. After curing the top coat, to wipe away the sticky layer (our Nail Prep & Wipe works for both steps)

How to apply

Saturate a lint-free wipe, which is important because cotton wool leaves fibres. Then wipe each nail firmly from cuticle to free edge, and use a fresh area of the wipe for each nail. Do not touch the nail plate with your fingers afterwards.

Signs your prep needs work

• Gel lifting at the cuticle or the sides
• Polish peeling off in one piece
• Bubbles under the base coat

Safety

Nail prep solutions are flammable. Keep them away from heat sources and use them in a ventilated space. Avoid prolonged skin contact and moisturise afterwards.
